Why aren’t Woohoo Skincare and Woohoo “Certified Organic”?

We’re incredibly proud to display our official Vegan, Cruelty Free and Australian Made logos.

We’ve worked super hard to earn the right to display those logos (jumping through hoops is an understatement), and we do pay a fee every year to these organisations to help support their causes.

It’s amazing how many brands create their own logos to display on their packaging. It’s totally legal, and these brands may very well be everything they say they are, but we prefer not to go down that route.

We want you to know that you don’t have to take our word for it – our products and processes have been scrutinised and been proven worthy by the very people who write the book on these things :) (i.e. Australian Made and Owned, PETA, and Choose Cruelty Free).

BUT....

There is a big one that is missing - Certified Organic

We get asked about it regularly, especially as we’re very open with how much of our products are made of certified organic ingredients.

We know it can be a little confusing. Why do we use high quantities of organic ingredients but not have the product itself certified?

A little ingredient called MSM

MSM sits in organic purgatory. It isn’t approved or banned by organic certifiers - because it hasn’t been put through the assessment process. And unfortunately we’re not in a position to fund the assessment.

It sounds big and scary but it isn’t. MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a bioavailable form of sulphur – the 4th most abundant mineral in the human body – and is vital for freaking amazing skin and overall good health.

MSM is one of those ingredients that we couldn’t ignore and was part of the inspiration behind Woohoo Skincare. It first gained attention in the medical world for its ability to decrease inflammation and provide pain relief for arthritis. (It was the secret for many successful race horses). But now it’s creating a major stir in the beauty world because it’s so darn good for your skin.

There used to be more reasons but we have solved many of them. Moving into the Happy Shed has been the single biggest hurdle blaster. Because now we have a space that can be certified.

What about Woohoo?

The Woohoo All Natural Deodorant Paste doesn’t contain MSM, so why doesn’t it get the certified?

We’d love to have Woohoo certified organic but it doesn’t contain enough certified ingredients to qualify, even though it’s 100% natural.

Bicarb soda and clays – 2 of our major ingredients in the Woohoo All Natural Deodorant Paste – technically can’t be certified organic because they’re minerals sourced from the ground, not from a plant of some kind (and in order to be organic, an ingredient has to be “grown”).

So poor old Woohoo doesn’t meet the 70% organic ingredient minimum to become certified organic.

Even though we might not be able to be certified organic at the moment, you might see some other natural certifications popping up in the future.

After all, this rollercoaster ride we’re on isn’t slowing down, so we’re going to see if we can keep taking it up a notch!
