Get better skin while you sleep.
Sounds awesome, doesn’t it?
Well we’ve got some good news – it’s totally possible and not one of those things that marketing companies say when they want to sell you their latest and greatest miracle product :)
While you’re having blissful dreams about exotic places or Ryan Gosling, your body is clocked on and doing its daily system restore.
They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing
While you sleep some pretty cool things are going on. You brain gets a rest from thinking, your heart rate, blood pressure and temperature drop and a growth hormone is released which repairs cells and tissue. Yep, a good hormone is released that actually helps your skin :)
Here are 5 tips to help you get a good night of shut-eye for better skin.
1. Go to bed clean
By the end of the day, you most likely have a layer of makeup and grime leaving a barrier on your skin, not allowing you skin to breathe. The pollution and other crap on your skin can actually break down collagen and elastin, which will give you the opposite of better skin.
Our personal favourite cleanser of course is the Cloud 9 Deep Cleansing Balm.
2. Have a restful sleep
We’re all in information overload which makes it hard for our brain to switch off. All those thoughts running around end up causing stress which is not good for you or your skin’s health.
30 minutes before bed try switching off all electronics (yes that means the TV and phones) and let your brain and eyes chill out. Before jumping into bed like Fred, try taking 10 deep, long breaths. It’s a basic form of meditation and it will stop your brain from thinking and relax your body for sleep.
3. Soft Sheets
Who else loves the feel of nice, fresh, soft sheets? There’s no study to support this, but we’ve found that organic cotton and bamboo feel so gosh darn good … so how can they not help sleep and your skin?
While we’re renovating your bedroom don’t stop at soft sheets – try to make your bedroom a relaxing place by getting rid of mess and clutter, bright lights shining in, or anything else that you don’t love :)
4. Change your pillowcase
We may not like to admit it but we all drool in our sleep (even just a little bit). This, along with all the dead skin cells we shed from our skin, can lead to bacteria thriving on your pillow which can mean skin issues like a dreaded breakout. Switch to a clean pillowcase every 3-4 days.
5. Use a facial oil before bed
Instead of a night cream try using a facial oil as your night time moisturiser.
As you’re soundly sleeping and your skin is doing its repairing and rejuvenating thing, your facial oil has enough time to soak deep into your skin over 6-8 hours and really help the renewal process by providing anti-oxidants, vitamins and hydration.
Your skin will be treated to wonderful, pure, oily goodness without having to worry about dealing with the emulsifiers and thickeners that are in creams.
There are plenty to choose from here. Phoebe’s favourite is the Laugh Out Loud Active Jojoba Oil and Aaron’s is pure Dilo Oil.
So there you go. 5 simple ways to get better skin and all you need to do is have a good night’s sleep with some facial oil.
